Colours have the power to stir emotions and awaken memories. Artists are not unique in their use of colour; scientists, psychologists, designers, writers and others also understand the power of colour. For the architect, selecting colours can be one of their most challenging tasks, yet one that can achieve tremendous impact when professionally implemented. "DETAIL Practice Colour" provides architects with the relevant expertise necessary for working with colours: from colour theory and the fundamentals of colour perception and effect, to strategies for developing coherent colour concepts during the design process. Colours in urban and rural settings, historical considerations, as well as detailed information on spatial effects, materiality and the influence of light, round out the theoretical part of the publication. Various examples of international projects realised in both interior and exterior spaces illustrate the successful implementation of architecture and can provide inspiration for your own work.

To complement the critical and objective view gleaned from the study of some sixty buildings, this design manual has been developed to provide a more synthetic approach to the principles which lie behind successful daylight design. These principles are illustrated with examples drawn from the case study buildings. The emphasis throughout has been on practical methods to improve design, rather than techniques studied for any intrinsic interest. The book provides the necessary tools to assist the designer to provide well daylit interiors, and shows that good daylight design is not a restriction o

This book is addressed at upper-level undergraduate and graduate students involved in research in atomic, molecular, and optical Physics. It will also be useful to researchers practising in this field. It gives an intuitive, yet sufficiently detailed and rigorous introduction to light-atom interactions with a particular emphasis on the symmetry aspects of the interaction, especially those associated with the angular momentum of atoms and light. The book will enable readers to carryout practical calculations on their own, and is richly illustrated with examples drawn from current research topic

The image of open working and living spaces flooded with light has, more than any other, become fixed in our minds as a symbol of modernity and the spirit of the times. While the workplace has always been the focus of ergonomic studies and optimization with respect to a good provision of daylight, large glass surfaces have now become the order of the day for living spaces as well. But does this automatically make for better illumination? Taking this question as its starting point, the publication Illuminating thematizes central aspects of light planning, including the connection between the provision of daylight and architectural design, building orientation, the nature of the facade, the ground plan, comfort, and the proportions and atmosphere of rooms. In the process, general characteristics and fundamental principles as well as subtle facets of an intelligent treatment of daylight are discussed and critically examined within an expanded architecture- and culture-historical context.

This book introduces the optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) interferometry - a new field of optics that is derived from radar. The study of optical FMCW interference not only updates our knowledge about the nature of light, but also creates an advanced technology for precision measurements. The principles, applications and signal processing of optical FMCW interference are systematically discussed. This book is intended for scientists and engineers in both academia and industry. It is especially suited to professionals who are working in the field of measurement instruments.

Evanescent Restrained. Ethereal. These are some of the words used to describe the architecture of Kengo Kuma, one of the most heralded of a new generation of Japanese architects. A recent article in ""Architecture writes of Kuma that ""he strives to give his buildings the qualities of a rainbow, composed of shimmering particles, more illusion than object that change as you look at them."" Increasingly the focus of international renown, Kuma's work is characterized by a delicate simplicity and minimalism, incorporating a wide range of ephemeral transparencies. Their ineffable vibrancy is achiev
